In this week's post, we wrote, "What we now know tells us that the war was a mistake, start to finish. The intelligence wasn't just faulty, it was intentionally, dishonestly manipulated by his brother's administration to create a pretext for a war they wanted to have from the start." This has been proven so many times, in so many ways, by so many people, we didn't even bother to back it up with references. But conveniently, Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo has just published a long piece explaining what actually happened, and why it wasn't a question of "faulty intelligence" leading the White House astray. It was a war of choice, one that didn't need to be fought, and shouldn't have been.
Marshall writes, "Looking back and looking at the time it has always been somewhat difficult to find the bright line where flagrant lying met willful self-deception. But the truth is painful and clear: Iraq wasn't a good faith mistake. It was a calamity based on lies and willful deceptions. Much of that was clear at the time. It's all clear now."
It's important to keep the facts straight about things like this, not to let those who'd like to massage history to protect their reputations get away with it. We know what happened. We need to remember, and not let it happen again.
